Toru Takemistu (1930-1996)
And then I knew 'twas Wind (1992)
duration: 12:30
Inspired by elements of the natural world and influenced by Debussy’s visual composing, And then I knew ‘twas Wind is an homage to Debussy’s Sonata. Hauntingly beautiful, this work blends the French style of the early 20th century with characteristics of Japanese traditional music. In Takemitsu’s words, the work, “has as its subject the signs of the wind in the natural world and of the soul, or unconscious mind (or we could even call it ‘dream’), which continues to blow, like the wind, invisibly, through human consciousness.”
